A plot of farmland spanning more than 150 hectares in the eastern county of Hualien has emerged as the largest collective organic farming zone in Taiwan. A ceremony was held last week to mark the completion of facilities at the zone at Changliang village, Yuli Township, according to The Chine Post.

Speaking at the ceremony, Li Tsang-lang, director of the Agriculture and Food Agency under the Council of Agriculture, said although a law governing organic farming was not enacted in Taiwan until 2008, organic farming has been developing at a faster pace than in other countries such as Japan, with 6,388 hectares of farmland around Taiwan having obtained organic certification so far.

With the latest addition, there are currently 24 collective organic farming zones around the country, including three in Hualien County, Li said. He added that the one in Changliang is the largest and will be used to grow rice, soybean and wheat in rotation. Tu Cheng-tse, deputy chief of the Taitung Veteran's Farm, noted that land used for organic farming is subject to strict restrictions. He said the plot of land in Changliang totals 250 hectares, 150 hectares of which have obtained organic certification, and is equipped with a drainage system and ecological pond. So far, 13 farmers have decided to rent the land. According to one of the farmers, Tseng Kuo-chi, collective farming can help reduce costs and risks and provide more protection for farmers.
