ORGANIC IN EUROPE

Today organic farming represents 5.6% of agricultural land in the EU covering almost 10 million hectares in 2012 and increasing by 5.4% on 2011 figures. Europe has the second largest market for organic products after the United States valued at EUR 22.7 billion. While the EU-28 alone accounted for EUR 20.8 of that total value in 2012 demand for organic products outpaces current supply in the EU.

1,Organic food is produce that has been independently certified to have been grown free of chemicals. Market values are taken at retail selling price (RSP).
2,The European organic food market had total revenues of $31,042.7m in 2013, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.0% between 2009 and 2013.
3,The fruit & vegetables segment was the market's most lucrative in 2013, with total revenues of         $7,832.6m, equivalent to 25.2% of the market's overall value.
4,The performance of the market is forecast to decelerate, with an anticipated CAGR of 5.3% for the five-year period 2013 - 2018, which is expected to drive the market to a value of $40,104.5m by the end of 2018.

Not only new consumers are trying organic food, the veteran consumers of organic
food have increased their spending in organic products. The drivers of organic food
consumption have changed over the last few years from a premium life style to
healthier food.

Organic food market in Spain:
Regarding organic agriculture Spain is much more of a producer than a consumer.
The natural conditions of the country (relatively moderate use of agri-chemicals,
numerous ecosystems and a favourable climate for early-cultivation) have promoted
the introduction of organic agriculture, but until now there was no home market with
stable trade-structures. Therefore approximately three-quarters of the production (for
the most part typical Mediterranean crops) are exported, mainly to central and
northern European countrie.

The first organic products appeared on the market in 1975, when a small assortment
of dietary products was sold in some businesses. 1978 saw the first exports of organic
products (rice). Then began a period that was influenced by foreign traders. Their
activities did not always contribute to the strengthening of the producer and
association structures in the country, now the Spain organic food had entered into international market through some foreign expos and they only care about the brand effect firstly ,then entering into direct sales model.

If you would like to expand your brand effect, you can attend some local professional exhibitions as first step to expand your foreign marketing.
