Alternative sales channels are becoming established

Although the specialist organic trade is still small, it is developing. Examples are the Naturboutique  shops and biologic.ua, that recently launched in Kiev and, with retail space of 200 square metres over two storeys, sells all the organic goods available in Ukraine, plus selected imports. It‘s  not only organic food that you find at biologic.ua – there‘s also a big department for natural cosmetics products and an organic bistro. The shop Naturboutique belongs to the same family that runs the  eco-hotel Maison Blanche . The hotel has two locations: a B&B in Kiev and just outside the city

Milestones in the development of the organic sector in Ukraine:

In September 2013 the Law on the Production and Selling of Organic Agricultural Products and Raw Materials was passed in parliament. The so-called National Organic Platform, consisting of Ukrainian stakeholders in the organic sector, is currently working on a revision of the law and its implementation regulations. The Ukrainian organic logo was recently presented. In Strategy 2020, passed by the government, the development of organic agriculture by small amd medium farms is a priority category.

The so-called Organic School, that has existed since 2015, has been offering farmers training courses in organic agriculture. Starting this year, there is the programme Organic Business  – Ukrainian training projects for the whole organic food economy (for example, drawing up business plans, training organic traders, business calculations by organic farms. Both initiatives have been set up and financed privately (because the state cannot contribute financially at the moment).

15 control organisations are currently accredited by the EU. With the registration of Organic Standard the first national certification body was created in 2007 and  today it certifies more than 50 % of Ukrainian farms.
